Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

Trump's statements come alongside the deployment of National Guard troops in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, despite vehement protests from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to back down. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, per reports. Officials indicated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, triggering demonstrations, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, seeking to block the military dispatch, urging a court to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

The governor has accused the president of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has said he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which allows a president to send active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an insurrection or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his new administration, the president has sent or mentioned deploying troops to at least 10 urban centers, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on Wednesday revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
