They're Doing in America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week a study forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a mighty king appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and clear fact that Christ from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best of Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and calls to the best parts in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best about American history, just as Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both modesty and belief, a combination that committed national faithful ought to accept.
