The move from the DNC to block the public viewing of its own autopsy report on the 2024 election seems stunning yet to be expected. Averse to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body behaves more like a PR firm rather than a political organization devoted to cultivating grassroots capacities to secure victories.
A Culture of Conformity
Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude of conformity, the committee has remained within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout 2025. Publishing the findings would have indicated that party leaders truly desire to foster honest conversation regarding the errors which allowed Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there is little to understand following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a justification reportedly given to justify concealing the analysis.
Major Failures an Autopsy Might Have Addressed
Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. These include:
- Voter Disengagement: The loss of a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
- The Insistence to Run: The determined decision of the incumbent to seek re-election, and an extremely delayed step-aside, has been criticized as denying the party's base of open primaries.
- Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the campaign is criticized for bowing to elite contributors without successfully attempting to confront the role of corporate greed.
- The Gaza Effect: The failure to shift a stance on the situation in Gaza is cited as losing many voters, particularly with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
- Eroding Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data demonstrates a major decrease of support for the party from young voters.
A Record Shunning Scrutiny
The decision to withhold is consistent with a longstanding habit of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. It echoes a dynamic in which the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress acquiesced to a sitting president's decision for running for re-election until a catastrophic public debate performance forced an exit.
At the same time, a significant majority within the party's base had been consistently telling surveyors that they did not want that candidate to seek re-election.
Campaign Spending Issues
A thorough report would also probe questions regarding where money went, including the amounts went to high-priced advisors and media firms during an electoral effort that burned through an enormous war chest over a few months.
A Larger Issue
At its core, the blockage of the official autopsy is symptomatic of a submission toward the established hierarchy responsible for a losing national race. The implication for rank-and-file members – including countless loyal volunteers – is that they do not be trusted to know what the insiders claim to have learned from a report based on extensive interviews.
A political entity incapable to critically review its own failings finds it difficult to break free from the pattern which was so helpful to the rival party.
