The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
