The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
