The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
